Floods Could Spread Disease
By Kartika Rahman

Bandar Seri Begawan - Following the recent heavy downpours of rain, which led to flooding in several low-lying areas and places with poor drainage, the Ministry of Health advised the public to take precautionary measures so as to avoid any accidents and the risk of spreading water-and food-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea, among others.

According to the Ministry, precautionary measures that should be taken in the event of flooding include those related to food safety. The public is advised to ensure that water supplies are clean and uncontaminated, to ensure that drinking water is boiled prior to consumption and to cook food thoroughly.

Meanwhile, measures to maintain hygiene include prioritising self cleanliness, specifically washing, hands with clean water before preparing or serving food and after using the toilet, and avoiding indiscriminate disposal of rubbish.

In cases there symptoms such as flu, cough, stomach-ache, diarrhoea, skin irritation, vomiting, and dizziness are experienced, the Ministry of Health advised the public to seek immediate attention. The public is also reminded to prioritise safety, especially by avoiding the exposure of children to floods so as to prevent accidental events such as drowning, injury and infection of diseases.

The Ministry also gave its assurance that hospital and health centres throughout the country are continuously monitoring any emergence of diseases that are caused by events of flooding in various places including rural areas.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
