Health Tip: If Someone is Struck by Lightning

If you see someone who has been struck by lightning, here are suggestions on what to do, courtesy of the American Red Cross:

  • Call 911 immediately.
  • It is safe to touch the person, as they cannot transfer lightning or its electrical charge to someone else.
  • Check the person for burns, which can emerge anywhere on the body. Also look for broken bones, or damage to the nervous system, hearing, or eyesight.
  • If the person is not breathing or the heart has stopped, administer CPR at once.
