Brunei Warned To Brace For More
Rains
By Husin Ismail
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Heavy downpour in the past days have triggered
landslides and floodings in various residential areas in the country
damaging properties and disrupting the daily routines of Bruneians.
However, authorities have yet to
release damage report caused by the landslides and heavy rains.
A forecaster at the Brunei
Meteorological Services yesterday warned more rains are expected in
the next few due to the presence of the northeast monsoon. Rains are
expected to continue until Monday and even possibly for a week.
However, no major flash flood is expected to occur, the forecaster
said. Based on the Brunei Climate Data, the northeast monsoon falls
between the months of December and March.
From December to January, Brunei
Darussalam will be facing the "wettest months" with high recording
of rainfall, said the forecaster. Most parts of the sultanate
experienced heavy rains yesterday which started from the afternoon
and lasted until late evening.
Mud and silted earth came pouring
into the houses in areas affected by landslides. Although, no major
damage was reported due to the landslides, properties and houses
were still ruined and the residents busied themselves to put their
belongings back in order.
Noraisan
Yusuf, a homeowner residing in landslide-hit area of Lambak Kiri in
Berakas, said the heavy rain nearly damaged his car. His kitchen and
garage were swamped by three-foot deep mud.
"I was lucky to move my car, just
seconds before the landslide hit,"Noraizan told The Brunei Times. He
said, luckily the landslide did not injure anyone, but cleaning up
will be a problem as for the past two days the water supply was cut
off, with the main pipe broken by the landslide.
Another resident in Sengkurong
area, Dk Halimah bin Pg Ibrahim, 53, said there was mud all over-
the walls of her house due' to the recent heavy rain in the
sultanate. However, she still counts herself lucky since her other
relatives were less fortunate as their homes were flooded inside and
their gardens were underwater.-- Courtesy of
