Not Just A Shopping Heaven
By Abdul Aziz Pandin
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The one-month school break has given me the
opportunity to go for a much-needed vacation. My destination -
Singapore.
The holiday was a ‘retail therapy'
for me after a year of stressful and hard work and the time has come
for me to redeem myself.
It was a perfect time to travel to
Singapore as with the Christmas celebration, every shop and store
were having its crazy discount sales.
One of the most celebrated places
to shop is the famous Orchard Road. The street was amazingly
decorated in lieu of the Christmas celebration with Christmas trees
which comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Mistletoes were seen
hung everywhere and the street was decorated with colourful
illumination lights.
The people were all in a high
spirit of Christmas. By being there, it has given us the chance to
see and observe Singapore's multi-cultural society. Going to one
place to another was not a hassle as they are accessible by
different modes of transportation from the taxi, bus, to MRT (Mass
Rapid Transit).
Shopping was not the only
obligation in my list. We decided to call it a day and channelled
our shopping energy and mood by visiting Singapore Night Safari. It
is the world's first Night Safari. It was a remarkable showcase of
nocturnal animals in wildlife. By taxi, it took us about 20 minutes
from our accommodation (The Royal Queen Hotel) just to get there.
With over 920 nocturnal animals of
130 species inhabiting 40 hectares of dense secondary forest, the
Night Safari offers an evening view of the wildlife park. Wild
creatures from Africa, South America and Asia can be found in the
Night Safari. There were also night performances such as the
Creatures of the Night Show, photo-taking sessions with the owl,'
fire-eaters, tribal dancers and strolling musicians.
Apart from a Wildlife Park, the
Night Safari is also renowned for its commitment to conservation.
The park can be toured either by walking or on a brisk stroll along
the spooky Mangrove Walk or any of the Night Safari's walking
trails.-the Fishing Cat, Forest Giants or Leopard Trial or a
45-minute tram ride covering a distance of 3.2km to catch endearing
antics of the nocturnal animals.
Night flash photography is strictly
prohibited as it might create a stressful environment to the
nocturnal animals.
Because of the shadowy setting, the
creatures are largely oblivious to a visitor's presence. The animals
are well treated in this park and this is evident by the change in
show appearances due to a sudden temperament shown by the animals.
Among the animals that can be found
in the park are the Zebra, Giraffe, Elephant, Malayan Tapir, Malayan
Tiger, Striped Hyena, Leopard, Otters, Giant Flying Squirrel, Golden
Cat, Greater Asian Rhino, Porcupine and the Indian Buffalo. There
are also restaurants available at the park such as the Ulu-Ulu
Safari Restaurant, Bongo Burgers, Ben & Jerry's and the East Lodge.-- Courtesy of Borneo
