Bandar Seri
Begawan - Flash floods left eight houses submerged in
rainwater at Simpang 166-25, Sungai Akar on the evening of December
28 due to the current monsoon season.
Some residents were not prepared
for the disaster as the area had not seen flooding in years. They
blamed it on the poor drainage system for the return of flash floods
to the area.
Due to heavy rainfalls, the water
rose up to knee level within seconds. A large number of valuable
goods were destroyed as a result.
A rescue team was dispatched that
night to transport residents to a higher ground. The Water Services
Department also arrived yesterday to supply water to residents. Also
fallen prey to the current rainy season was Sungai Tampoi.
Like Sungai Akar, the drainage
system was to blame for the flooding, according to residents.
Meanwhile, a tree fell on a power cable yesterday in Jalan Kubu Baru,
Jerudong, leaving residents without electricity.
According to ASO Sulaiman bin Haji
Taha, who led fire and rescue as well as electrical services
personnel in the operation, said he received a call at 6.25 am
concerning the fallen tree.
It took 30 minutes for the
personnel to remove the 15metre long trunk, and the power supply
restored by late afternoon.-- Courtesy of Borneo
