Belait Weekend Market To Relocate
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Starting next week, the popular weekend market in
Tutong Saji, Jalan Setia Di-Raja, will be relocated to the Pasameka
Seria parking area, to make way for upgrading works initiated by the
Kuala Belait Municipal Department. The upgrading will, however, not
affect eight permanent food stalls located on the first floor of the
building.
The weekend market ropes in a great
number of visitors every Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, who
scour the place in search of fresh vegetables, fruits and local
cakes, which can be purchased in bulks.
The market opens up opportunities
for over a hundred small and medium entrepreneurs, particularly
vegetable and fruit farmers, as well as fish mongers from the Belait
district.
They showcase their goods at a
minimal fee of $1 per day, imposed by the KB Municipal Department.
Department of Building, Planning and Development Control Section
project leader Ariffin bin Hj Bujang revealed that the upgrading
project - which costs over $300,000 - involves three major
construction works, which will take roughly four months to complete.
"The upgrade works are being
carried out for the convenience of its residents. By beautifying the
place and adding shelters to the four-block, double-storey building,
it will provide them greater pleasure as the shop," he said.
The work includes Fitting tiles
along the buildings pathways, laying asphalt, and installing a
canopy at the stairway.
Works will be carried out in stages
to ensure customers can still visit their favourite stalls, famous
for its chicken rice, rojak, kolo mee and wet Kueh-Teow. The
relocation will assist in enlivening the quiet atmosphere of the
Seria market, where homemade craft items and fresh vegetables are
sold, the project leader added. It is common to see people flocking
to Pasameka Seria on late Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings,
when the vendors are setting up their stalls.
The great bargains available at
both weekend markets serve as a crowd-puller. He also expressed
hopes that traders will cooperate with the department in ensuring a
smooth transition.
The upgrade is carried out by the
department to improve the standard of living for the people in the
district, and also to enhance its appearance in a bid to attract
tourists from neighbouring counties.
