Taiwan Quake Interrupts Internet
By Asri Razak

Bandar Seri Begawan - The devastating earthquake that rocked Taipei last Tuesday, has led to the interruptions of Brunei Darussalam's internet connectivity over the past few days, TelBru reported yesterday.

The interruptions of internet connections was a result of damaged major submarine cables affecting connectivity due to the 7.6 Richter scale quake which resulted in internet users in Brunei to encounter difficulties in connecting to the internet. Internet provider Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru) links to Hong Kong was also affected.

With just one operational link, there were high congestions with other telecommunications companies re-routing their traffic through the same link. According to the Office of Telecommunications Authority (OFTA), restoring connectivity levels of this magnitude will take a duration of two to three weeks, but due to the damaged seabed and aftershocks, it will further compound repair works.

Telbru has been informed that cable maintenance ships are being deployed to the affected sites to begin immediate repair works. The Internet Network Operation Centre in Hong Kong reports, Te1Bru has taken initiatives to ensure interruptions and internet connectivity are stable and are coordinating with regional partners to re-route traffic via Malaysia.

Traffic performance on Wednesday improved as Te1Bru secured and restored bandwith via Malaysia, although peer-to-peer (or also known as P2P) traffic was suspended temporarily to allow basic services to stay functional and gradually restored with the increase of bandwith in Brunei. By 8pm,

TelBru's internet traffic and connectivity was re-routed via Malaysia. TelBru are still coordinating with regional carriers to provide partial relief through re-routing traffic via Malaysia and partial restoration via Hong Kong and Japan. Coordination for an alternative route of bandwith from Europe is still progess yesterday to improve connectivity in Brunei.  -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
