Awg Yong's Factory Introduces New
Method In Sago Processing
By Haji Mohd Zaida Haji Damit
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Sago is a kind of food obtained from the Rumbia
tree after processing.
The trees are mainly found in parts
of Brunei's interior - Belait, Tutong and T emburong districts. They
are also found in Mukah, Sarawak, which is one of the largest
producers in food products from sago.
The Rumbia trees only grow well in
wet areas beside the riverbank. In an effort to produce sago for the
market in the Sultanate, Awg Yong Pin Chin, a 69-year-old resident
from Kg Ukong, Tutong, who began his business in sago making since
November 13, 1981, introduced the new method in sago processing by
using machine. He bought the rumbia trees from others costing
between B$15 and B$20 per tree. He said his sago factory has become
a place of interest for students as well as tourists from Japan,
Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
"A kilo of sago will cost B$1:50
while worms from the rumbia (Limbatar) will cost B$20 per kilo from
the factory," he added.
His business is brisk as sago is a
popular ingredient for making "Ambuyat"and also for making biscuits
and crackers. Awg Yong supplied his products to market as well as
supermarkets throughout the Sultanate.-- Courtesy of Borneo
