Special Olympics Set For March
2007

Begawan - A meeting was held yesterday morning to begin
preparations for the Special Olympics next March.
The meeting was held at the
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports which was attended by officers
and staff from respective sporting organisations, special needs
centres, the special Education Unit of the Ministry of Education and
representatives from the local media, which was chaired by Hj
Rosmadi Hj Mohd Daud, of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports,
the Chairperson of the Executive Committee.
Among the many items discussed
included the entry requirements for the Special Olympics and the,
specific criterias to qualify as a special athlete for the upcoming
event. The two day event will be hosted at the Hassanal Bolkiah
National Stadium in Berakas.
The special sporting event is aimed
at fostering friendship and goodwill among the many participants
that will comprise of different races and cultural backgrounds but
it is also hoped that it would promote recognition of their
involvement in sports as a contribution to public life, the
community development and in supporting the drive towards building a
healthy nation.
The Special Olympics is an
international organisation dedicated to empowering individuals with
intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and
respected members of society through sports training and
competition.
Today, it is a worldwide movement,
active in more than 150 countries with almost 1.4 million
participating athletes and 500 thousand volunteers supporting
activities around the world.
More than 20 thousand Special
Olympics competitions are held worldwide each year, administered by
more than 200 Special Olympics Programmes. Brunei was officially
accredited to the World Special Olympics in August 2004.-- Courtesy of
