Brunei Pilgrims Safe
By Za'im Zaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - None of the Hajj pilgrims from Brunei Darussalam now in the holy city of Mecca were affected in a fire that reportedly gutted a hotel there.

This was confirmed yesterday by Haji Talip bin Haji Apong Head of Hajj Officer for Brunei Darussalam who is currently in Mecca in a telephone interview with the Borneo Bulletin last night.

Malaysia's national news agency Bernama reported yesterday that 16 pilgrims were hurt in a hotel fire in Mecca. However, the report did not specify the nationality of the pilgrims.

Hj Talip said that the Brunei pilgrims are now in Mecca and they are safe and healthy except for one pilgrim who has fallen ill and is currently being treated in Medina. More than 1000 Bruneian pilgrims are performing the Hajj this year.

He also mentioned that they are making preparations for "wuquf' in Arafah and stoning of Jamrah at Mina. Before the stoning, pilgrims were already given advice and guidelines on the stoning at Jamrah so that they will be safe.

Wuquf is where pilgrims must spend the afternoon within a defined area on the plain of Arafat until after sunset. No specific rituals or prayers are required during the stay at Arafat, but is said that all prayers will be answered. After sunset the pilgrims leave for Muzdalifah, an area between Arafat and Mina, where pebbles are gathered for the stoning of the Devil.

The Bruneian Hajj Officer in his message to the families of the pilgrims in Brunei advised them not to worry and to pray for the pilgrims' safe return from the holy land and that they will get a "Mabrur" (accepted) Hajj. The first flight of Hajj pilgrims is expected to return to the country on the 4th of January. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
