Bandar Seri
Begawan - Late night revellers who were making a nuisance of
themselves in downtown Gadong on Christmas Eve had a close encounter
with the law.
|
Instead of meeting the grand old man
in red, they had a shocking experience when the men in blue
swooped on them and made short shrift of their inappropriate
behaviour.
In their relentless effort to
maintain peace and quiet as well as safeguard the nation's
security aspects, the Royal Brunei Police Force launched a
series of raids into some of the areas that were noted to be the
haunt of some errant elements.
The main objective was to
ensure that festive celebrations were done properly and with
responsibility, sources said.
Similar operations were also
conducted in other areas of the country. In Muara, a joint
operation was held with other government enforcement agencies
and the police from 11pm up until 2.30am. It was led by the
Assistant OCPD and staged around the area of the Muara Police
District. |

Meanwhile on the roads, numerous
vehicles were apprehended for violating the traffic law at
roadblocks set up by Royal Brunei Police Force at Jln Gadong
from mid night' until the wee hours of yesterday morning.
Besides the commercial Gadong
area, other "hotspots" known for loiterers, like Rimba and Batu
Bersurat, were also inspected by the Police. |
Codenamed 'Operasi Pencegahan Jenayah'
or `Crime Prevention Operation', the operation in the capital
involved around 50 Police personnel led by Acting DCO of Brunei
Police District.
According to the DCO of Brunei
District Police, the objectives of the operation were to curb
unwanted, immoral behaviour and illegal activities, immigration
offences as well as to clamp down the disturbing noises. Youths who
were loitering around these areas were asked to produce identity
cards and were given stern warnings.
The Ag. DCO said police would like
to remind the public not to loiter around in public places and
create disturbances. Brunei District Police would continuously
conduct similar random raids in addition to patrols and inspections.
If members of the public have any information on illegal activities
they can channel the information to the nearest police station, he
added.
The police roadblocks conducted by
personnel of Investigation and Traffic depaitinent together with
`Unit Tindakan Segera' or "Special Operation Squad" from the Royal
Brunei Police Force lasted from midnight until six in the morning.
During the six-hour operation
police caught drivers not wearing seatbelts, driving without licence
as well as driving a vehicle without any road tax. Though some
drivers tried to evade the roadblock by detouring to other roads,
traffic police personnel have acted swiftly to catch these suspected
offenders. - The Muara joint operation involved 16 officers from the
religious enforcement agency, 14 officers from the Immigration's Law
Enforcement Unit together with 25 police personnel from the Muara
Police District.
The aim of the operation was to
curb unwanted, imm, pral behaviour, immigration offences as well as
religious offences.
The operation last night focused on
several rented houses, rented rooms and foreign workers quarters,
around the area of the Muara Police District including Serasa and
Mentiri.
The police confiscated undeclared
alcoholic beverages. At one place, the enforcers found a cross
dresser who was visibly drunk. He was brought to the Muara Police
District office for farther investigation.
Police also found a foreigner
trying to evade the inspection by hiding under a bed during the
operation. The foreigner was also brought to the Muara Police
District office for further investigation. --
