Colouring Contest Brings Out
Children's Creativity
By Shafiyi Azahari
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Some 50 talented children aged between five and 12
yesterday took out their crayons and colour pencils and let their
creativity flow during yesterday's colouring contest held at the Hua
Ho Department Store at Tanjong Bunut.
The contest, organised for the
first time by the store and sponsored by Nestle Products Sdn Bhd,
aimed for the youngsters to spend their school holidays doing fun
and at the same time educational activities.
Parents and friends of the
contestants trooped to the store, which was decorated with colourful
balloons to match the contest's concept, not only to join the fun
but also give support to the children.
Competitors were divided into two
categories: kids aged five to nine and the other category for
children 10 to 12 years old. Contestants were asked to use only
colour pencils or crayons. They were asked to colour pictures of a
snowman and three dwarfs.
Rick Ortega, the store's art
graphic designer and also one of the two judges, said the coloured
pictures are judged based on the colours used, contrast, the
subject, and creativity.
The children sat on the floor
during the one-hour competition fully concentrating on their work
and unmindful of the crowd. Their 'enthusiasm and concentration were
undiminished even as their tired fingers tried to beat the deadline
to finish their artworks. Those who failed to meet the deadline were
given an extra 15 minutes to finish their piece.
Five winners were chosen for each
of the two categories. All winners brought home Nestle Koko Krunch
hamper and goodie bags. -- Courtesy of
