The Dangers Of Alternative Health Products

Bandar Seri Begawan - In the quest for alternative medicine, the products on the market may offer either a cure or a poison.

The four products identified in the traditional medicines yesterday contained Phenylbutazone, Piroxicam, Methampyrone, Sibutramine, Sildenafil Citrate, Theophylline, Dexamethasone, Allopurinol, Chlorpheniramine and Paracetamol.

According to the Pharmacy Enforcement Section of the Health Ministry, consuming Phenylbutazone can lead to nausea, vomiting and kidney failure. Piroxicam can cause diarrhoea, blood disorders and liver damage. Methampyrone can lead to kidney disorder and even death. Sibutramine is a slimming agent but prolonged consumption will lead to high blood pressure and even insomnia.

Sildenafil Citrate is used, for impotency treatment, but when mixed with other medicine can lead to headaches, nausea and even death. Ingesting Theophylline can cause gastro-intestinal irritations and convulsions.

Dexamethasone can cause gastric bleeding and muscle weakness. Allopurinol can cause rashes,' blood disorders and kidney function disorders.

Ingesting Chiorpheniramine lowers blood pressure, convulsions and blood disorders. High dosages of Paracetamol can lead to kidney and liver damage. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
