Quick-Fix Medicine Banned

Bandar Seri Begawan - There seems to be no quick fix to getting into shape or for a fairer complexion or even a libido boost.

Nor are there any dream-come-true remedies to looking younger than one's age.

Over 90 items of almost miracle quick fixes widely advertised and sold rampantly in the Brunei market have come under the hawk eye of local health authorities who have tested the ingredients and ordered to take off the shelves, after banning them from being used.

Most of the unbelievable results promised by these drugs have been proved to be nothing but clever gimmicks by mercenary business people.

The so-called wonder drugs have been found to contain extremely harmful substances.

Nearly a hundred of so-called traditional medicines have been struck off and banned from being sold in the Sultanate after they were found to contain harmful substances.

Among them were Dewa Manjur 99 Sehat Stamina Serbuk, Asmur (Mahkota Dewa Plus Ginseng), Daun Dewa Serbuk and Tanduk Rusa Kuat Lelaki Capsule.

Dewa Manjur 99 Sehat Stamina Serbuk manufactured by Dewa Mega Jaya PJ, Banyumas, was found to contain paracetamol phenylbutasone. Paracetamol can cause rashes, lowered blood pressure and blood disorder. In over dosage it may lead to kidney and liver damage.

Two other medicines - Asmur (Mahkota Dewa Plus Ginseng) manufactured by Serbuk Sari PJ, Cilacap, and Daun Dewa Serbuk manufactured by Daun DewaAlami PJ Cilacap - were found to contain phenylbutazone.

Consumption of phenylbutazone may lead to nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, oedema due to fluid and electrolyte retention, hearing disturbance, shortness of breath, and swelling of face or lower legs. More serious reaction include gastric irritation with ulceration and gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatitis, nephritis, kidney failure, leucopenia, aplastic anaemia and agranulocytosis.

Tanduk Rusa Kuat Lelaki Capsule manufactured by Multi Sari Manjur PJ, Banjarmasin was found to contain sildenafil citrate.

Sildenafil citrate is a drug used in the treatment of impotency that can be harmful. The drug can interact with other medicines resulting in serious adverse effects such as lowering of blood pressure, if used together with some anti hypertensive drugs. It may also cause adverse effects such as headache, dizziness, dyspepsia, nausea, visual disturbance, myocardial infarction palpitations and death.

The Ministry of Health acknowledges that the following cosmetic products are banned in neighbouring countries and the public is advised not to purchase or use any of these products:

Most of the traditional medicines came from neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and China. These products contain sildenafil citrate; phenylbutazone, methampyrone, theophylline, dexamethasone, chlorpheniramine, allopurinol and piroxacam.

Sibutramine is a slimming agent and long-term consumption may lead to high blood pressure, heart palpitation and insomnia.

This substance cannot be used by individuals with a history of cerebrovascular disease or cardiovascular disorder such as cardiac arrythmias, heart failure, peripheral arterial occlusive diseases, coronary artery diseases and it is also to be avoided by individuals with severe hepatic or renal impairment.

Adverse effects that may be caused by methampyrone may include tinnitus neuropathy, agranuloctytosis, aplastic anaemia, kidney function disturbance, shock and death.

Consumption of piroxicam may lead to nausea, diarrhoea, peptic ulceration and severe gastrointestinal bleeding, hypersensitivity reaction (including rashes and biinchospasm) blood disorder, renal failure and liver damage.

Theophylline ingestion can cause gastro-intestinal irritation, palpitations tachycardia arrythmias and convulsions.

Long-term consumption of dexamethasone may lead to serious adverse effects such as moon face, retention of fluid and electrolyte, gastric bleeding, hyperglycaemia, glaucoma, osteoporosis, increased susceptibility to infection, and muscle weakness (myopathy).

Adverse effects related to allopurinol include rashes, disturbance to kidney function and blood disorder such as thrombocytopeania, agranuloctytosis and aplastic anaemia. Ingestion of chlorphenramine may lead to drowsiness, rashes, lowering of blood pressure, in coordination, and difficulty in swallowing, tinnitus, blurred vision, palpitation, arrhythmias, tremor, convulsions, blood disorder and liver dysfunction. These substances are prescription only drugs that should be taken only when prescribed by a medical doctor except for paracetamol.

All these affected products contain substances which are controlled under the Poisons Act (Chapter 114) and it is an offence to import, sell or offer for sale any product containing a poison without licence issued by the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health reminds the public that it is an offence under the Poisons Act 1956 to sell any product containing any substance controlled under the Poisons Act and the penalty for such an offence, upon conviction is a fine of $8,000 or imprisonment of six months.

Anyone in possession ofaffected products is advised to destroy or surrender them to the Pharmacy Enforcement Section, Block 2G 8"` floor, BSB Health Centre in Jalan Ong, Sum Ping, Bandar Seri Begawan.
