Shun Deceit In Business Deal
By Shafiyi Azahari
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Islam encourages its followers to earn rezeki or
livelihood through business as it is one of the most apt halal
resources to earn a living.
However, Islam also put great
emphasis on doing business with honesty. Prophet Muhammad PBUH was
himself a businessman and so was most of His Companions. Conducting
business according to Islamic teachings, devoid of treachery would
result to Muslims gaining "big rewards" from Allah SWT.
This was disclosed in a sermon
during Friday's prayers read by khatibs at mosques all over the
country.
The- sermon said it was appropriate
for honest traders or businessmen to receive rewards for they are
certainly facing a lot of challenges while conducting their
businesses such as the tendency to be greedy and to gain big profits
by using dishonest methods such as treachery. Honest and trustworthy
businessmen were regarded as "fighters" who had won against all
those temptations.
"In business, we have to be very
careful so as not to fall into any acts against the religion such as
selling haram items such as liquor, stolen things, smuggled items or
selling, dubious food or meats," the sermon said.
The sermon further preached that
"Islam also forbids us from deceiving or cheating in buyings and
sellings although it can bring about good profits, but it is not of
halal sources and in fact they (swindlers) are oppressive and being
cruel to buyers which will definitely cause losses and' regrets to
the customers."
"Some of the treacherous examples
in businesses include decreasing weights and measurements, mixing of
fresh items with bad or of lesser quality for the same price, or
putting the bad products underneath a heap of fresh ones," the
khatib said. Thus the sermon said traders must run their businesses
in ways that were blessed by Allah SWT as was shown by Prophet
Muhammad PBUH who was an honest and trustworthy businessman and as a
result his profits multiplied.
The sermon also reminded all people
to avoid wrongful methods in order to reap profits for the wealth
accumulated would not be blessed, they would lose people's- trust,
their prayers would not be answered and they would merit a place in
hell. Prophet Muhammad's PBUH hadith narrated by Khaulah alAnsari
said that those who mixed wealth of Allah SWT and wealth of those
which were not halal would place them in hell on judgement day.
On a final note, the sermon advised
all to be thankful for whatever amount of wealth or rezeki gained as
long it was halal as was mentioned in the alQuran, Surah Al-Baqarah
verse 168: 0: "People, eat from the earth's products all that is
lawful and good, and do not follow the steps of Satan; he is your
most ardent enemy." -- Courtesy of
