Bandar Seri
Begawan - Kebabs are one of the favourite food among
Bruneians. New eatery - Casbah - uses only the freshest and halal
meat for the popular snack.
Casbah
recently opened its doors to the public at Unit No 5, Ground Floor
at one of the building complexes in Sengkurong.
Its first branch in Kg Lambak at No
204, Simpang 201 was opened in 1999. Its manageress, Sandrawati
Abdullah, bears the responsibility of looking after both of the
family business.
Casbah
(London Kebab) in Sengkurong is operated by four chefs led by Ashraf,
who hails from New Delhi. The-doner kebab, comes in beef, lamb and
chicken. The Lamb doner kebab is a one of Casbah's specialties, a
favourite among patrons.
The kebabs sold here are topped
with fresh lettuce and folded - with the pita bread or rice, served
with an array of condiment sauces. Sandrawati said that her
customers come from all walks of life - mainly local professionals,
expatriates and curious customers.
According to her, the success of
the restaurant comes from the loyal support of their valued
customers who have grown in size.
The idea of setting up Casbah came
while she was studying with her husband in the UK. She noticed that
most of the Bruneian students there love eating the fish and chips
and the kebabs. With this in mind, she started the business in
Brunei offering to this niche market.
The word 'Casbah' means an oasis of
the east where people gather to enjoy festive occasions. According
to Sandrawati, Casbah also serves the ever-so popular ‘fish and
chips'.
The dish is served with battered
sausages, pickled onions, cod roe and scallops (battered potato).
"We do cater for small occasions. Recently, we had an order placed
for some 100 doner kebabs," she said. For more information, call 239
