Bangkok
By Sonia K.
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Three officials from the Narcotics Control Bureau
recently attended a course on Crime Scene Investigation by the US
Federal Bureau of Investigation, at the International Law
Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Bangkok.
These course attendees represent
the 200th, 201st and 202nd participants from the Brunei law
enforcement community to have attended ILEA.
The US Embassy has coordinated with
11 different departments to send students for a variety of law
enforcement, management, or counter-terrorism related courses.
After meeting with the course
attendees, US Ambassador Emil Skodon said, "The fact 200 Bruneians
have participated in ILEA courses is a significant symbol of the
Bruneian government's commitment to world-class professional law
enforcement standards. The US Government is pleased that we have
been able to assist Brunei's law enforcement agencies in maintaining
and upgrading their expertise through ILEA training courses,, and we
plan to continue to do so".
The participants were pleased with
the course, describing it as "hands-on" and having learnt many new
techniques. From November 27 to December 8, the three officials, Awg
Rahaman bin Haji Panjang, Mohd Izman bin Hj Tarip and Bismil bin Hj
Abu Bakar, actively participated in lectures and practical exercises
at the academy.
The participants also studied
proper techniques of locating, recognising, documenting, collecting
and preserving items of evidence.
The main focus of the course was on
the recognition of scientific and evidently value those items most
commonly encountered at the scene of serious offences.
The two-week course was sponsored
by the US Department of State's Bureau of Diplomatic Security and
designed to enhance the capabilities of law enforcement officers who
are responsible for investigations at the scenes of major crimes.
ILEA Bangkok was established in 1999 as a joint US-Thai initiative.
Its objective is to support
criminal justice institution-building in Asia, and strengthen
cooperation amongst the law enforcement communities of Asian nations
and the US. -- Courtesy of Borneo
