Bandar Seri Begawan - A local student from the Pengiran Jaya Negara Pg Hj Abu Bakar Secondary School in Kuala Belait was recently awarded the Government Scholarship Scheme to study at the National University of Singapore (NUS) High School of Mathematics and Science, Republic of Singapore.

Before she begins the programme Dyg Feyra will undergo an orientation and the introduction session at the Institution starting on December 22, 2006.

Sending a student to the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science is one of the outcomes of a memorandum of understanding between the Brunei Ministry of Education and Singapore's Ministry of Education of which was signed during a working visit by the Brunei Minister of Education to Singapore on February 2006.

The agreement was made on cooperation in some of the domains in education, which included sending excellent students in Brunei to the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.

The process of choosing the best students in this country was carried out by members of the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science. In the initial stages, some 30 students from the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and SM Pengiran Jaya Negara Pg Hj Abu Bakar were chosen to undergo a written test on August 2006. Six of the 30 students then made it through to the interview stage. Of the six, only two students managed to qualify for the institute's programme. However, one of two remaining students withdrew from the race, citing personal reasons.

NUS High School of Mathematics and Science is a leading Singapore school specialising in the fields of Mathematics and Science. It offers education programmes to excellent students in secondary level for six years study, after which the students would be able to further their studies to university level, either in Singapore or abroad.

Countries that have been participating in the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science programme include Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and China.

The main aim of His Majesty's Government through the Ministry of Education for rewarding such scholarship scheme is to give exposure to the students that have potential in a different education environment.
