Year End Danger Months, Says Fire
And Rescue People
Bandar Seri
Begawan - November and December are the months where most
drowning cases occur every year.
And the Fire and Rescue department
says cases of drowning in those months are mainly caused by the
rough seas and high tide.
Throughout this month, the country
will experience high tide that at sometimes can reach 2.7 metres.
This called for extra precautionary measures for all who are using
water transport or even going for a swim on the beach.
According to the Marine Department,
the water level will be higher when the high tide is accompanied by
heavy rain. It said from the 17th until 25th of this month, the high
tide will occur from 7 pm to 3 am.
Throughout this year up to November
alone, three calls were made to the Fire and Rescue Department for
drowning cases.
A better outlook of the situation
by the public regarding their safety has lessened the possibility of
such occurrence when compared to 2005 where some 11 calls of
drowning were reported to the department.
The current persisting high tide,
rough sea and unsettled weather conditions at sea have also affected
the fishing activities in the country. This can be seen as less
fishermen go out to sea. Fish Landing Area in Jerudong was full of
idle fishing vessels.
The fishermen received warning from
the Fisheries Department that reminded them to take extra precaution
during this unsettled weather conditions. Boat operators and ship
captains are to bear in mind to navigate with extra care
particularly during heavy rain. -- Courtesy of
