Another 27 Cosmetic Products Banned

Bandar Seri Begawan - Another 27 cosmetic products were banned in a neighbouring country due to adulteration of banned substances, a press release from the Ministry of Health stated based on the report from the National Agency of Food and Drug Control of the neighbouring country.

The public is advised not to purchase or use any of the products listed below, which have been found to contain banned substances such as Mercury,. Rhodamin B and Cl Pigment Red 53.

The 27 cosmetics products are Yen Lye YL II Day Cream produced by Yu Lin Co Ltd Taipei, Taiwan; Yi Fuli Day and Night Cream, ARCHE Pearl Cream, Cecily Beauty Cream Formula, Cream Mutiara (Day) and Yellow Cream (Night) from Hong Kong; Leving Pearl Cream produced by Meita Chemical Works, Taiwan; Donna Peapis Cream produced by Donna cosmetics; Leeya Whitening Come Beauty Pearl Cream from China; CB Special Whitening Come Beauty Pearl Cream, Yellow and White Cream; Paimei A and B Anti Freckles; Qubanyifushuang Cream;, White Jade Pearl Paste Moisture & Health and Huadi Lipstick, which all contain mercury.

Baby Change Eye Shadow & Blush, Hofine Eye Shadow/Lip Gloss/Powder Cake and Leiqi Make Up Kit all contain Rhodamin B. Qibin Lipstick (2) contains Rhodamin B & CI Pigment Red 53, while Siella Lipstick contains CI Pigment Red 53 and Hengfang Lipstick (No 09, 42) from China all contain Cl Pigment Red 53.

Laurel Cosmetics Lipstick (No 027, 098) contains CI Pigment Red 53, Ai Zhuang Lipstick (No 14, 17, 23, 27, 30, 46, 60, 63 and 64) from China contain Rhodamin B, Eren'Lipstick with Vitamin E (No 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 08, 10, 11 and 12) contain CI Pigment Red 53, Eren Water Shine & Crystal Lipstick & Lip Gloss (5,8,12,14 and 18) contain CI Pigment Red 53, Ya Shang 5-in-1 Lip Gloss/Eye Shadow/Mascara Blush/ Powder (No 02000 and 02636) from China contain Rhodamin B, Ya Shang Water Shine Diamond Lipstick (No 341), Ya Shang Vitamin E French Science (No 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 13) from China contain CI Pigment Red 53, while Ya Shang Water Shine Diamond Lipstick (No 353 and No 360 ), Ya Shang Moistening Lipstick (No 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 14) from China contain CI Pigment Red 53.

Mercury is a heavy metal considered to be harmful and may act as a poison even in low concentrations. Use of this substance on skin may result in adverse effects such as skin pigmentation, allergy and skin irritation. In higher concentrations, it may cause permanent damage to the brain and kidney and affect foetal development. Short-term exposure to high concentrations of mercury may cause vomiting, diarrhoea and lung damage and it is a form of carcinogen that may cause cancer.

Rhodamin B-and CI Pigment Red 53 are synthetic colorants generally used in paper, textiles or tints. These forms of colorants may cause irritation to the respiratory tract and is a form of carcinogen that may cause cancer. Rhodhamin may cause liver damage at high concentration levels.

Some of these affected products contain substances which are controlled under the Poisons Act 1956 (Chapter 114). It is an offence to import, sell or offer for sale any product containing poison without a licence issued by the Ministry of Health and the penalty for such an offence upon conviction is a fine of $8,000 or an imprisonment term of six months.

The Pharmacy Enforcement Section when contacted said that they "are not aware of the presence of the products being marketed here in Brunei". Those who have the listed products are advised to destroy or surrender them to the Pharmacy Enforcement Section, Block 2G 8`h floor, BSB Health Centre in Jalan Ong Sum Ping in the capital.
