Senior Citizens Could Contribute To the Country, Function Told

Bandar Seri Begawan - Up to last month 16, 543 old people were paid pensions, it was stated during a function yesterday.

The Community Development Department held the function in their honour for their contributions to the community.

The event is in conjunction with the International Senior Citizen Day that is celebrated every October 1.

Brunei's senior citizens are steeped in experience and skills to share with the new generation.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Major General Dato Haji Awang Mohammad was present at the function.

Also there were the Permanent Secretary and Deputy Permanent Secretary at the ministry, the Director of Community Development Department and the Brunei Muara District Officer.

Senior citizens are members of the community aged 60 and above and are provided with assistance and protection from the Department of Community Development. Among the services extended to them are pensions under the Old Age Pension and Disabled Act 1954.

The Community Development Department encourages senior citizens to keep active despite age because the healthy habit is beneficial for their physical, mental and emotional well being.

The Senior Citizen Day is especially observed to commemorate contributions and services by the elderly in nation building aside from fostering closer ties among families, the society and the government. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
