Do Not Use 27 Cosmetic Products Warning

Bandar Seri Begawan - The public is advised to refrain from buying or use 27 cosmetic products banned in a neighbouring country due to adulteration with banned substances. The products are from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The Ministry of Health advises - based on reports issued by the National Agency of Food and Drug Control of a neighbouring country - the cosmetic products are believed to contain banned substances such as "mercury"," Rhodamin B", and "CI Pigment Red 53rd.

Mercury is a harmful metal and caused adverse effects on skin even when used at low concentrations.

When used at higher concentration, mercury can cause permanent brain damage, kidney and affects foetal development leading to cancer. Rhodamin B and CI pigment Red 53 are synthetic colourants normally used in paper, textiles or tint. The substances can caused irritation to the respiratory tract and are a form of carcinogen that may cause cancer.

A high concentration of Rhodhamin can cause liver damage. The products contained controlled substances under

the Poisons Act, Chapter 14, and it is an offence to distribute, sell or offer for sale of the said products without a license issued by the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health also reminded the public that it is an offence under the Poisons Act 1956 to sell any product containing any substance controlled under the Poisons Act and the penalty for such an offence, upon conviction is a fine of eight thousand dollars or imprisonment of 6 months.

Members of the public who have the affected products are advised to either destroy or surrender them to the Pharmacy Enforcement Section or contact the unit at telephone number 22-300-36.  -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
