Early Christmas For German Embassy
By Khairunnisa Ibrahim
Bandar Seri
Begawan - It is a custom in Germany to set up an Advent
wreath four weeks before Christmas, which Germans celebrate on
December 24 instead.
This year, however, the German
embassy in Brunei Darussalam decided to celebrate Christmas earlier.
The German Ambassador, Conrad
Cappell and his wife, Lilo, held a cocktail celebration at their
residence yesterday evening for their colleagues and friends. Guests
included various ambassadors and diplomats to Brunei, expatriates,
business figures and local dignitaries.
The ambassador's residence, richly
decorated with Christmas ornaments, provided a warm and festive
setting as guests mingled with one another. The choir from the St
Andrew's church added to the celebratory mood by performing some
carols, and guests joined in singing German Christmas songs.
In his welcoming speech, the
Ambassador expressed his appreciation that he and his wife were able
to share the Christmas spirit with their friends.
For some guests, this year marks
their first Christmas experience in the sultanate. Katrin Grafe,
whose husband is a lecturer at the local university, said she was
pleasantly surprised to find that local shops offered plenty of
Christmas decoration.
In addition, the Winter Wonderland
set up by the Empire Hotel and Country Club, where her children
played in the artificial snow, provided a sentimental reminder of
the festive season in her native land. "It feels like like I am at
home," she said. -- Courtesy of
