BASE Wants A Bigger Budget
By NAJ

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Association for Science Education (BASE) recently held its 29th annual general meeting at Brunei International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas.

With a call for funds to support the government's push for making inroads in science, one of the aims of the meeting was to nominate BASE new office bearers.

Present as the chief guest was Cikgu Hj Abd Hakip bin Hj Burnt, Acting Special Duties Senior Officer, Head of Human Resource Management Section, Ministry of Education, who also presented certificates to BASE office bearers 2005-2006.

In the BASE President Dk Hjh Fatimah bte Pg Hj Petra's welcoming speech, she said: "BASE will be 29 years of age very soon. However, there are still pending matters that BASE have raised for a long time, which need more workforce and time to achieve it. This includes strengthening membership and its network, obtaining a permanent venue and becoming financially stable. In terms of the latter, BASE is always grateful to the main sponsor, Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd, for actively supporting BASE activities."

"To conduct BASE yearly programmes, - which include the three main activities: BASE Science and Technology Week, BASE Science Teacher Seminar and BASE Science Camp - the association needs more budget in promoting science and technology education to all. Therefore, BASE are ready to obtain more financial support from individuals or other agencies to help BASE activities for teachers, members and students," she said.

After the election of the new BASE office bearers, Cikgu Awg Makrimi bin Hj Ibrahim was named the new BASE president. The ceremony ended with the recital of surah al-Ash-read by Cikgu Hj Mat Dani bin Hj Bakar.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
