Hundreds Of Teams Walk And Hunt
By Husin Ismail
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A total of 350 teams yesterday tried their best to
outsmart each other as they hunted for clues to win major prizes
including the top plum of round-trip ticket for two to Hong Kong in
the third Helix@Discover walk-a hunt held in the capital, organised
by Brunei Shell Marketing (BSM).
The walk-a-hunt contest was held to
mark the 36th anniversary of the renaming of Brunei Town to Bandar
Seri Begawan.
The official renaming of the state
capital was made in October 1970 in honour of His Majesty the Sultan
and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam's late father, Al-Marhum
Sultan Hi Omar Ali Saifuddien Saadul Khairi Waddien, who assumed the
royal title "Seri Begawan" after he abdicated his throne in 1967.
The so-called "treasure hunters"
started their quest as early as 7.30am at the Taman Haji Sir Muda
Omar Ali Saifuddien field here. The700 participants divided in teams
of two, were clad in blue polo shirts given by the organisers. The
contestants were given until 12.30pm to finish their hunt.
The competing teams milled around
for hours to look for answers in the clues handed to them at the
start of the contest. To unravel the clues, the teams have to find
the answers hidden in Yayasan building and in the shopping complex
in Kiulap. The so-called "hunters" have to complete the clues to be
able to win the "treasures" which aside from the Hong Kong trip for
the winning team included the latest mobile phone models,
PSPplaystation, iPod Nano and more as prizes for the runners-up.
"I always love to do this kind of
activity, and it's like a dream come true to being here this morning
participating in the walk-a-hunt," said Nora Amalina DP Ibrahim, a
firsttime participant, holding her folder filled with clues.
Following the clues was very
"confusing and tricky", especially for a novice like her team,
Amalina told The Brunei Times.
"By the way, it was really good
being here, its been tough so far for me and I'm sure I'll be still
hanging in there until the end where we were given until mid-day,"
she said. Amalina's teammate Nor Dewana Tassim said: "This is our
first time to try this challenging competition."
She added that the hunt was more
than having fun but also a way to learn Brunei's history. "It was
more than fun to try, maybe once in our life-time, but this may also
help us to know more about Brunei or the capital itself," Dewan
said.
According to Suffian Zainal Abidin,
BSM's public relations officer, the winner will be announced three
days later due to the large number of participants and when judging
of the answers are completed. Present as the guest of honour to
officially launch the "hunt" was Nairul Anuar Abdul Lahai, Chairman
of the Brunei/Muara Municipal Board. Also present was Pg Yasmin Pg
Mohammad, Managing Director of BSM.
BSM
holds events calling for the participation of the public in a bid to
contribute towards community development. BSM has been involved in
wide-variety of social and community activities to further promote
the nation's sustainable development. Yesterday's event will be
dedicated to support children in needs including those at the child
