Saturday Night Blues

Begawan - Flashing blue lights lit up bustling Gadong in the
late hours of Saturday night as screaming police sirens silenced the
pesky noise that has long been a signature of the popular shopping
and 'partying' enclave.

Some 100 law enforcement personnel
comprising the Royal Brunei Police Force from the Brunei
District Police Station, Narcotics Control Bureau, Law
Enforcement Section, Department of Immigration and National
Registration, Religious
Enforcement Section swooped on the high-end Gadong area known
for its crowds, late night loitering and the cacophony of
sounds.
The 1-am raid organized by the
Brunei District Police Station and led by the Ag. OCPD of Brunei
District Police and assisted by Ag. DCO of Brunei Police
District, ended at 4.30am.
Gadong was not the only focus
but three other locations were also targeted, including Rimba
and the Capital.
During the operation, law
enforcement agencies encountered five cases, four of which are
religious-related - two locals in |

their 30's were suspected to be
involved in alcohol consumption while two foreign couples in
their 30's were found in close proximity or "khalwat" and a
foreign national without valid documents.
At the moment, four people are
being detained for farther investigation at the BSB Police
Station. According to the DCO of Brunei District Police, the
operation was to eradicate crime, close proximity and `soothing'
the racket that engulfs the area. |
Meanwhile, another similar joint
operation by law enforcement agencies also took place in Gadong
between Investigation/Traffic Department of Royal Brunei Police
Force and the Legal and Enforcement Section of the Road Transport
Department. The operation began at l pm and ended two hours later
involving 29 RBPF personnel and nine personnel from Legal and
Enforcement Section (RTD).
Both agencies conducted roadblock
at two locations in Jalan Pasar Gadong and the traffic light leading
to Gadong area from Menglait. The Investigation/Traffic Department (RBPF)
was led by a senior inspector and an inspector while the RTD Legal
and Enforcement Section was led by its chief and assisted by a
senior enforcement officer.
A total of 15 summons were issued
for offences like expired licence, suspension modification or
vehicle body sagging, with some of the vehicles detained at
Investigation and Traffic Department. There were 3 compound cases
regarding licence plates.
Road Transport saw five cases
including two commercial vehicles without speed-warning device, a
vehicle in unsatisfactory condition and another involving
modification.
A spokesperson from the Legal and
Enforcement Section, Hj Suaib bin Hj Md Taha, told the Bulletin that
"this sort of joint operation will continue" and added that RTD
reminds road users to obey traffic regulations in Brunei - a prime
objective of the joint operation. --
