'Brain fever' toll in northern India passes 400

Lucknow, India - Nearly 30 children have died this month of mosquito-borne encephalitis in northern India, taking the toll since July to 401, health officials said.

"The encephalitis toll has climbed up to 401 since its outbreak in July," said Manoj Verma, a senior government official in northern Uttar Pradesh state.

At least 102 patients, most of them children, are also being treated in different government hospitals.

Encephalitis, popularly known as "rain fever", is endemic to the eastern part of the state, with the mosquito-borne virus often passed on to human beings from pigs. -- AFP
