By Hanni ABD
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Some 50 youngsters, aged 13 to 17, took part in a
four-day OGDC Discovery Camp for teens with the objective to promote
interest and knowledge in the fields of science and technology
through team building activities.
The camp kicked off on Friday
morning and participants were taught to set up their own tents
during an ice-breaking session to help them get better acquainted
with team members. Later a series of sports and technology
activities were held.
Participants were required to share
their tents with six other team members and had to stay overnight at
the OGDC campsite.
However, due to heavy rainfall on
Friday evening, participants were relocated to the front gallery of
OGDC, Head of Operations OGDC, Iskandar bin Hj Alias, said. The next
day, participants were challenged to make a hot air balloon
incorporating three objectives namely capacity, achievement and
relationships. Team members were given three and a half hours to
construct a hot air balloon with the materials provided. They were
given twenty minutes to plan the design of their balloon and their
written work was taken in for judging, which would contribute to the
total score, including time to select materials.
Materials provided included rice
paper, rubbish bags, glue, nylon, cotton strings, aluminium cans,
paper cups, birthday candles, scissors and long rulers. After
selecting preferred items, teams set out to build their balloon.
The project was judged on proof of
planning, teamwork, design and workability when they launched their
hot air balloons.
In the evening BSP Fire and Rescue
Unit briefed teams quick evacuation and rescue methods during a
search and rescue activity held at the exhibition hall. Today, teams
will depart for a day trip to Temburong with various team building
and motivational activities.
The camp will end on Sunday
afternoon with a closing ceremony expected to attended by guest of
honour, Deputy Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company
Sdn Bhd, Hj Zainal Abidin bin Hj Mohd Ali.
At the camp, participants are
supervised by ten OGDC staff and will receive prizes and
certificates.
At the end of the camp, the

skills and learn to work as a team. -- Courtesy of Borneo
