Smugglers Always One Step Ahead
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - The recent halt by relevant authorities to - smuggling attempts of fowls and petrol through mouse trails at the Junjungan Limbang border was highly lauded by members of the public as well as villagers who lived near the illegal lanes.

They said that while the enforcement agencies did a good job, they still needed to keep up with the smugglers, who were usually a step ahead.

"When a trail becomes too hot for them, they would just create a new one," said a resident of Kg Junjungan, who is also a member of the Consultative Council. Last Friday, police stopped and questioned a local couple for their attempts to smuggle fowls into the country through a mouse trail.

They suggested a concrete wall or security fence to be built along the borders of Brunei and its neighbours. This could help in stopping the alleged flow of smuggled narcotics, cigarettes, liquors, firecrackers and other taxable goods from another country into the Sultanate.

They said that between Brunei and Limbang, there were about six to seven mouse lanes where people on bikes, motorbikes and scooters could go through within 15 minutes. It is estimated that there are about 22 rat trails between the borders of Brunei and Sarawak.

"If we construct walls or security fences, we may be able to control the alleged smuggling activities," they said.

They added- that a wall or a security fence of length about 30km could be built along Lumapas to Kg Bebuloh in the Brunei-Muara District to discourage people from smuggling activities. Apart from refraining such activities, the main purpose of barriers has been to prevent the infiltration of unwanted elements into the Sultanate.

They said that illegal entries and smuggling of contrabands took place at the mouse trails that connected this country with its neighbours.

The villagers explained the construction of concrete walls or metal fences was vital to stem out smugglers and thieves who entered Brunei illegally to commit crimes.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
