Brunei-Registered Vehicles
Vandalised In Kuching
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Four local registered vehicles became the latest
targets in a series of crime-related incident in the neighbouring
country.
The four vehicles, transporting
eighteen family members took a day trip to Kuching, Sarawak on
Monday morning this week with the intention to pay a visit to their
relatives in Sri Aman.
Never did they realise that their
short trip would turn into a misfortune as their vehicles were
seriously vandalised and almost all the vehicle's glass windscreen
were shattered into pieces.
Some of the family members who were
there for the first time, took the opportunity to snap photos at the
popular gigantic cat statue in the middle of the city's busy
roundabout at about four in the late afternoon. Heading towards the
popular tourist spot, they parked their vehicles at a designated
parking space area located about 100 metres away.
Although their vehicles were parked
not far from the area, their view was blocked by the passing
traffic. While taking snapshots of the landmark, a family member
reports noticing two suspicious men looking closely at their
vehicles and she ran to the parking site.
"This incident came as a shock
considering the fact that we parked our cars among Malaysian
registered vehicles. Why are Brunei local registered vehicles always
the main target?" said the 51-year-old local government employee in
an interview with the Weekend.
The vehicle owners who were from
Mumong, Seria and Bandar Seri Begawan had to fork out between B$450
and over B$1,000 to repair the unnecessary damages. One of the
vehicles was a brand new car, which sustained major'damages to its
doors and smashed' front, rear and side passenger screens.
Meanwhile, two other vehicles also experienced similar damages.
The incident was reported to the
Padungan police station and fortunately,, the Brunei Consulate
provided accommodation for the victims who also took along their
children during the day trip, as they could not return home that
night due to heavy downpour. They drove home with their damaged
vehicles, escorted by police till Sibu.
The victim stated that it has
becoming an alarming trend for locals to travel by car to
neighbouring countries and advised locals to re-consider travelling
by road for the safety interest of their children. -- Courtesy of Borneo
