Poser Over Cheap Net Call
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Those calls that come so cheap on the computer to
us here in Brunei are actually coming at a great price.
|
Though we the consumer may not have
to pay so much, those calls can really extract a lot of money in
one clean sweep. Especially if the provider has not licensed his
ware. Under Section 33(1) and 33(2) of the Telecommunications
Order, 2001, unlicensed operators are liable to a fine of BND
100,000, and imprisonment in addition to a further fine of up to
BND 10,000 a day for continuing offences.
The Internet and other Internet
Protocol (IP)-based networks present new opportunities of
delivering innovative multimedia applications and
telecommunication services to end-users.
With that, the Authority for
Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AiTi)
invites representatives of VoIP call centres and other
interested parties to attend a dialogue on Dec 27, 2006, 9am at
Cesar 1 and 2, Level-8, Orchid Garden Hotel in Kg Anggerek Desa. |

To further help the public and
industry understand the regulatory concerns of VolP services in
general, AiTi is also floating a public consultation paper on
VoIP downloadable at www.aiti.gov.bn/voip
Voice over Internet Protocol
also known as VoIP involves making a phone call using the
Internet rather than by using the traditional circuit switch
telephone network. In general there are three main ways of
making a phone call using VoIP namely personal computer to
personal computer (PC-to-PC), phone-to-phone; and pc-to phone or
phone-to-pc. |
Brunei's telecommunications
regulatory and ICT industry promoting authority, AiTi is concerned
with the increasing number of call-centres and resellers of
telecommunication long-distance call services mainly through Voice
over Internet Protocol or VoIP that are currently rampantly
available in the country.
Taking into account of one of
AiTi's key thrust areas to help make the local telecommunications
and ICT industry more vibrant and competitive for the overall
benefit of consumers, AiTi intends to consult and advise the
concerned parties on the regulatory and licencing requirements for
operating telecommunication services in the country.
The networks involved in the
implementation of VOID services can be the public Internet, the
managed IP network of a service provider or a combination of both.
Consumers will benefit from additional choice of voice services
brought by IP Telephony, innovative multimedia content, applications
and services using IP-based technologies (e.g integrated voice and
video services).
VoIP offers substantial cost
savings over traditional long distance telephone calls. The main
disadvantage of VoIP, however, is that there is a greater potential
for dropped calls and generally lower voice quality. For
registration and further information about the VoIP dialogue,
contact AiTi at (673)2-323232 ext. 1286 / 1119 or email ipgroup@aiti.gov.bn. --
