All Monkey Business During River
Cruise
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Twenty-two students of Kampong Masin Secondary
School recently attended a one-day CfBT Borneo Outdoors
environmental programme, according to a press release.
The day's highlight was the
exploration of the Brunei River. Sharp-eyed students were able to
catch a glimpse of Proboscis monkeys, rare inhabitants of Borneo
mangrove swamps named after their distinctively long noses.
The students were then briefed on
the lifestyle of these unique monkeys and the environment factors
that have contributed to their endangered status.
The students were also fortunate
enough to be invited to the home of Aslan, the guide of the river
cruise, and experienced the life of Kampong Ayer natives.
Meanwhile, the press release noted
that "HSBC sponsorship has allowed the CfBT Borneo Outdoors to keep
these youth programmes unique while maintaining both organisations'
commitment to raising environmental awareness among. school children
and fostering an appreciation for Brunei's history and heritage".
The CfBT Borneo Outdoors has
continued to update its youth programmes, using Bubungan Duabelas as
the base. Schools can choose from a variety of heavily subsidised
programmes, which encourage students to learn about their cultural
heritage and the country's flora and fauna as well as develop
teamwork spirit and English communication skills.
Among the programmes available are
trips to Subok Forest Reserve and Temburong National Park. -- Courtesy of Borneo
