Bandar Seri
Begawan - Schools from six Southeast Asian countries have
confirmed their participation in the fifth "ISB Borneo Global Issues
Conference V (ISB BGIC V)" to be held in the sultanate in March next
year, with more interest pouring in from other overseas schools.
The conference is similar to a
United Nations event organised annually by the International School
of Brunei (ISB).
ISB
is the first school in the country to invite Asian schools to
participate in such an event. Schools from Thailand, Singapore,
Malaysia, Vietnam and China have confirmed their participation. At
the moment, seven private and non-government schools from Brunei
will also take, part. Among those that have confirmed their
participation are St Andrew's School, Soas College, Science College,
Sixth Form Centre and Maktab Duli.
Invitations have been sent to all
schools in Brunei as well as to schools in the Asean region. The ISB
BGIC V will bring the secondary school participants to discuss
leading global matters in a model United Nations conference. Student
leaders will take on leadership roles as Secretary General and
various Committee Chairs such as the Political Committee, Human
Rights Committee and the Environment Committee will represent the
views of their assigned country correctly to the roles of delegates,
debating some of the world's challenging problems.
Issues that would be debated on
will focus on the UN's eight millennium goals which include world
hunger, poverty, universal education, combating diseases, gender
equality and environmental sustainability.
While teachers take on the role as
supervisors and advisers, the conference is completely coordinated
and directed by the students, with the aim of encouraging
international unity, understanding and world citizenship among the
participants.
The ISB BGIC V will also aspire the
development of the students' teamwork skills, leadership qualities,
time management, research skills and public speaking skills.
Next year's participants will also
have the opportunity to meet Professor David Bellamy OBE, an
internationally renowned scientist and conservationist recognised
for his appearances on the BBC bringing environmental and scientific
issues to light. ISB has also invited a host of other highly
distinguished guests including Nobel Prize Winner Professor Wangari
Maathai and other notable experts in various fields to grace the
event.
The conference was first held in
2002, of which last year's ISB BGIC Conference IV was cosponsored by
BLNG and the Islamic Bank of Brunei (IBB).
