Race On Robotics Underway In
Science & Technology Camp

Begawan - The Brunei Darussalam UNESCO Science and Technology
Camp recently held a welcoming dinner at the VIPAssembly Hall of
Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong. Twenty-nine students from
Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Japan participating in the camp
attended the ceremony. Present as the guest of honour was Dato
Paduka Dr Hj Ismail bin Hj Duraman, Vice Chancellor, Universiti
Brunei Darrussalam.
The ceremony began with a welcoming
speech by Awang Hj Metali bin Hj Mirassan, Acting Head of the
Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre,
Ministry of Education. In his speech, he welcomed all foreign
delegates and participants involved in the event. He also thanked
UBD for the support and in particular for allowing the use of
computer laboratories as well as the technical experts, student
volunteers and others.
The students from Brunei
Darussalam, Malaysia and Japan began their robot-building yesterday
at the UBD Physics Lab and Library where they researched on "Science
and Technology for Sustainable Development".
They also took the opportunity to
create a new programme and to make a new design for their robots,
not just copying from the original design. They were also given a
limited time to build their robots, said Mr Jin Sito, CEO/ Founder.
The objective of the camp is to
raise social awareness on the importance of science and technology
through interactive science, education and to encourage the
development of hands on learning curricula in the education system.
It is also to promote the
importance of science and technology literacy and to generate
publicity and recognition for Brunei Darussalam as well as to
promote collaboration and cultural exchange between students of
Brunei Darussalam and other countries like Japan. Organised by the
STEP Centre, Ministry of Education and in cooperation with UNESCO
and UBD, the camp began on December 11 and will end on December 17,
2006.
It is also supported by Institute
Technology Brunei (ITB) and departments under the Ministry of
Education, Brunei Shell Petroleum Company, Royal Brunei Airlines,
Japanese Fund-in-Trust, JS-Robotic Inc Japan, Science and Robot
Education Centre (CREFUS) and Institute Technology Tokyo. -- Courtesy of Borneo
