Calling Local Shutterbugs For
Commonwealth Photographic Awards
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Entries are now being accepted for the 12006/7
Commonwealth Photographic Awards organised by the Commonwealth Press
Union (CPU).
The overall theme for the Awards
this year is `Achievement'. This is an open competition for all
Commonwealth residents. The photographs will be judged on the
interpretation of the theme as well as technical quality.
The Awards offer a view of how
people in the Commonwealth, with its mixture of races, creeds,
cultures and ways of life, see themselves and others.
In addition, there are two new
categories. The Canberra Times/CPU Young Photographer Award will be
offered to those aged between 21 and 25 on January 17, 2007, from a
developing country. The prize is a three-week photographic residency
at the newspaper's offices in Canberra, Australia.
Meanwhile, `Three Pictures - One
Story' category invites entrants to create a storyboard. The purpose
is to tell a story of achievement in three pictures. The prize for
this Award is £250.
The overall winner of the
Commonwealth Photographic Awards will receive £1,000 sterling, and
further prizes will be awarded to the regional winners.
There will also be several
exhibitions taking place in Commonwealth cities which will feature
the winning images. The first will be in London in March 2007.
The Awards are sponsored by
Australia's The Canberra Times, the Commonwealth Broadcasting
Association, The Commonwealth Foundation, Commonwealth Secretariat,
Canada's Globe & Mail, The Guardian Foundation and The Royal
Commonwealth Society.
Dateline for submission of entries
is by Wednesday, January 17, 2007. For more information, visit
