Curtains Raised On Science And
Technology Camp

Begawan - The Brunei Darussalam-UNESCO Science and Technology
Camp officially opened at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD)
Multi-purpose Hall yesterday.
The event is organised by the
Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre, in
collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
Present to officiate the event was
Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education cum guest of
honour Haji Mohd Daud bin Haji Mahmud.
Carrying the theme `Science and
Technology for Sustainable Development,' the camp is participated by
19 students from the nation, two students from Malaysia and eight
students from Japan. All of them are aged between 13-16 years.
Additionally, 15 UBD and Institute
Technology Brunei (ITB) students are also involved in the event.
According to STEP Centre Acting Head Haji Metali bin Haji Mirasan,
UNESCO contributed US$10,000 to organise the event, while the
remaining was sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd.
Also sponsoring the event are ITB,
several departments under the Ministry of Education, Royal Brunei
Airlines, Japanese Funds-in-Trust, JS-Robotics Inc, Japan, Centre
for Robotics Education and Future Sciences (CREFUS), Japan and Tokyo
Institute of Technology.
The objectives of the camp are to
raise social awareness on the importance of Science and Technology
through interactive science education, encourage the development of
hands-on learning curricula in the education system, promote the
importance of science and technology literacy, generate publicity
and recognition for Brunei Darussalam, as well as promote
collaboration and cultural exchange between students of Brunei
Darussalam and other countries like Japan.
In his speech, the guest of honour
said, "The Ministry of Education encourages the use of technology in
the classrooms to improve the teaching and learning processes. This
is in line with our strategic themes of teaching and learning
excellence through the use of appropriate and state of the art
technology and instruments, and in providing quality education."
The camp will come to a close on
December 17. Throughout the week, participants will be involved in
lectures, robot building, research activities, field trips and
presentations.

to check out the presentation sessions at the UBD Multipurpose Hall
