Workshops To Boost Harvest Quality

Begawan - "Efficient post harvest management will reduce the
losses and improve the quality of vegetables and fruits, thus
contributing to an increase in production of marketable crops.
Products, which are of high quality
and comply with food safety standards, have the potential to break
into local and international markets".
This was stated by Dyg Hjh Aidah
Binti Hj Mohd Hanifah, Senior Special Duties Officer at the
Department of Agriculture, who was the guest of honour at the
opening ceremony of the Workshop on Post Harvest Management at the
Agriculture Department building, Old Airport, Berakas yesterday.
She said the Department of
Agriculture gives emphasis to developing the agriculture sector and
agri-food industry. The ceremony also saw the distribution of a set
of posters and flyers on post harvest management as a means for
reference.
The workshop was the first in a
series which will be held throughout the country. The main
objectives are to upgrade the knowledge and understanding of
vegetable and fruit growers on the implementation of effective post
harvest management systems.
The workshop is conducted by Mr
Colin Bunt, the Project Consultant from Australian consulting
company Macro Agribusiness Consultants Pty Ltd) and officers from
the Post Harvest and Food Technology Unit, Agro Technology
Development Division, Department of Agriculture.
Some 70 participants from the
private sector and personnel from the Brunei-Muara District attended
the workshop. Three other workshops will be held today at the Seri
Kenangan Hall, Community Hall Complex, Tutong District; Balai Raya,
Kampong Sungai Liang, Kuala Belait District on Dec 14, 2006 and the
Agriculture Development. Unit Office in Temburong District on Dec
18, 2006. Some 200 participants in total are expected to attend the
