Taking The Danger Out Of Road
Crossing
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The pedestrian bridge in Jalan Gadong has been
completed weeks ahead of schedule.
The bridge will make life a lot
easier for Menglait Secondary School students attempting to cross
the busy double-lane road.
Residents are hoping that both
students and members of the public will make use of the overhead
bridge, and thus reduce the chances of a pedestrian-motorist mishap
from occurring.
"Students will no longer have to
play `hide and seek' with motorists in their attempt to cross from
one side of Jalan Gadong to the other," said Mohammad Haji Metassim,
a Kg Menglait resident.
"However, in the case of other
overhead bridges, some students and members of the public still opt
to take the risk of crossing the busy roads instead of using the
government-provided bridges," he added. He urged the public to make
use of the overhead bridge for the sake of their own safety.
In the past, there have been
numerous complaints about students choosing to cross busy roads and
take unnecessary gambles, despite the availibility of overhead
bridges. The pedestrian bridge in Gadong is the last of a
four-bridge project undertaken by the Public Works Department.
The three other bridges are located
at Jalan Berakas, Jalan Muara and Jalan Tutong. The bridges cost the
government roughly B$1 million. They were constructed by ATH-Femco
for the Public Works Department (PWD), Ministry of Development.-- Courtesy of Borneo
