Bandar Seri Begawan - A 37-year-old local man who has previous convictions for theft-related offences was sentenced to five years' imprisonment by the Bandar Magistrate's Court recently after he pleaded guilty to five theft charges.

Zoel Aliffin bin Hj Mohd Zaini admitted to stealing cash amounting to $1,960, two mobile phones, a wallet, an ATM card, four pillowcases, two gold rings, two gold bracelets, one translator unit, a camera and two vehicles - a Toyota Corona and a Toyota Corolla. According to the Deputy Public Prosecutor Christopher Ng, who was assisted by DPP Norhayati DP Hj Omar, the stolen valuables and the two vehicles belonged to five people whom the defendant stole from in the Berakas area as well as in Bandar and Sengkurong.

Before passing sentence, the magistrate commented that the offences against property were very serious in the eyes of the court and would be dealt with strictly. He noted that the defendant victimised defenceless women and that his actions caused much hardship and distress to his victims. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
