Turning Students Into Life-Long
Learners
By Tony Alabastro
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Students are expected to become life-long learners
in the new millennium, and enjoy learning in the classrooms and
apply study skills, said Acting Director of the Curriculum
Department, Ministry of Education Hj Matassan bin Hj Bungsu.
He urged parents to work closely
with the school to ensure the success of their children and help the
school further raise standards and provide quality education.
"Private education has always
played a significant role in Brunei, and the ministry of education
hopes private schools will continue to upgrade their infrastructure
and, quality to education programmes to complement those in
government schools, and join hands with the government to improve
the quality of education in Brunei.
Hj
Matasan was the chief guest during the 4' closing exercises of
Tinkerbell Learning School in Jalan Muara, Salambigar, held at the
Scouts Headquarters, Jalan Beribi. The graduation theme, "Be All You
Can Be", reflects what its children and teachers have been achieving
together, as the school has matured over the past four years, said
John Robert Bartholomew, school president.
"At Tinkerbell Learning School,, we
have a focus of ideas which the administration and the teaching
staff share, and continue to re-define and develop: building a
child's self confidence; promoting learning as an adventure, and
encouraging the development of a child's imagination.
"Staff, parents and administration
must direct all focus on making the child's learning environment the
best place that it can possibly be.
"`A school comprises a complex
network of interrelationships between the staff, the parents and the
administration. These three components of the educational process
need to be resilient, caring, supportive, positive, resourced, well-organised,,
informed, and most of all, focused on the needs of the child.
"For a child to flourish and be all
that a child can be, each component must strive for being all that
it can be and also value the contributions made by the others, "
Bartholomew said.
"The toga you are wearing right now
is a sign of success in your first layer of education, the
preschool. The trials in life do not end here but another long
journey awaits you on your way.
Never stop learning, Successful
people simply don't quit. They are persistent, determined and
diligent," said Mummy Tinkerbell lidil Rahman.
