UBD's Institute Of Medicine To Hold Dermatology Lecture
By Azrol Azmi

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Institute of Medicine, Universiti Brunei Darussalam will be organising a medical lecture, "Updates on Dermatology", at the university's Senate Room, Chancellor's Hall on December 11 at 7 pm.

On hand to deliver the lecture is Dr Yasuo Kubota, a professor from the Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine at Kagawa University Japan.

Dr Kubota will show findings that blister-forming skin disease, epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) accompanied with mutated keratin 14 (K 14), aggregates the induction of ER stress.

Another area of focus will be the corticosteroid-sparing regiments for the treatment of a topic dermatitis (AD), one of the most common chronic diseases, that poses a therapeutic challenge to dermatologists and has a significant impact of the patient's quality of life. Topical corticosteroids have been the mainstay of treatment- for AD for some time but long-term steroid use is associated with a negative side effect profile.

Dr Kubota also wishes to study the potential efficacy and safety of topical ointment combination therapy in the treatment of skin lesions on the torsos and limbs in adult AD patients.

This trial with tacrolimus ointment and topical steroids is of great interest to explore the possibility of synergy while minimising the side effects, of steroids by reducing their frequency of use.

The Department of Dermatology also examines the impact of therapy on the quality of life in patients with AD by using a Dermatology Life Quality Index questionnaire. Another lecture, which will be held on the same day, is the "Updates on Urology", presented by Dr' Yokiyoshi Kakehi from the Department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, Kagawa University.

The upcoming lectures are part of the Institute of Medicine's medical series, which is CME/CNE accredited.

Admission to the lecture is free and is open to members of the public. For more information, contact Sharimawati binti Haji Sharbini at 246 3001 (ext 1953).-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
