Police Tighten Road Safety Measures
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - As the year draws to a close, the road enforcement authorities have beefed-up efforts to make the roads safer by intensifying roadblocks and spot checks to nab errant motorists.

The Land Transport Department (LTD) and the Royal Brunei Police Force are on the look-out for cars including commercial vehicles with excessive modifications, expired road tax, faulty speed warning devices and malfunctioned car parts.

Hj Suib Hj Md. Taib, Senior Enforcement Officer at LTD speaking to the Weekend said that they would conduct more spot checks towards the year-end.

This week alone, the two enforcement agencies with 41 personnel netted 16 commercial vehicles and three saloon cars in an operation on Rimba highway for having malfunctioning speed warning devices, bald tyres, failure to bring documents that allow them to drive commercial vehicles, malfunctioning- car lights as well as those with tinted glasses and expired road tax.

A compound fine of $50 was issued to errant commercial vehicle drivers. Furthermore, they were asked to undergo another vehicle inspection in their office in Beribi. During the operation, which was carried-out for more than two hours starting 9am, the LTD enforcement agency was led by Hj Johary bin Hj Abd Karim, its Enforcement Head.

"Road users tend to neglect road safety. As licensed drivers, they should know the traffic regulations. If they can obey traffic rules when driving outside Brunei, there's no reason that they can't do the same on Brunei road. The spot check is conducted in line with LTD's aspiration to reduce road accidents and to create awareness among road users," Hj Suib said.

"The joint operation was the sixth of its kind held throughout the country this year including two in Temburong. Obviously, it would again be intensified next year," he added.

Commenting on commercial vehicles where the most common offence recorded is the faulty speed warning device, Hj Suib called on drivers to ensure that such equipment is functional and maintained to be in a good condition. Such device helps inform the driver of speed limit while on the road.

"More often, we find that such a device is sometimes not calibrated by the owner. It must be calibrated every six months during inspection. The device blinks if the driver exceeds the speed limit of 50km/hr and will blink twice if the vehicle speeds above 65km/hr," he said.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
