Urology Talk At UBD
By Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Institute of Medicine of Universiti Brunei
Darussalam (UBD) will be organising a Medical Lecture entitled
"Updates on Urology" by Dr Yoshiyuki Kakehi on Dec 11 at 7pm at the
Senate Room, Chancellor Hall, UBD. Dr Yoshikyuki Kakehi is a
professor and chairman of the Department of Urology at Faculty of
Medicine, Kagawa University, Japan.
Since late 1990s, laparoscopic
surgery has been integrated into the treatment strategy for
urological diseases in Japan. At the Department of Urology of the
Faculty of Medicine at Kagawa University Hospital, 80 per cent or
more of radical nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy for kidney
cancer and 90 per cent or more of adrenalectomy for adrenal tumours
including pheochromocytoma are performed by laparoscopic surgery.
Laparoscopic surgery has also been
applied to donor nephrectomy and other urological diseases such as
PU junction stenosis. Dr Kakehi will introduce the department's
surgical technique as to kidney cancer, adrenal cancer, and urachal
carcinoma of the bladder with particular attention of its pitfall
and future perspectives.
On the other hand, incidence of
prostate cancer in eastern Asian countries including Japan is very
low as compared to that in Western countries. Current incidence
rate, however, has be strikingly increasing due to the spreading'
use of serum PSA-test and change in dietary habits of Japanese men.
According to the earlier stage
shift by PSA-screening, many patients have become good candidates
for radical prostatectomy (RP). RP, however, often causes erectile
dysfunction post-operatively.
In order to improve sexual function
after RP, they have to perform autologous sural nerve grafting
during RP for patients who strongly hope to maintain sexual function
after surgery. Dr Kakehi will also introduce surgical procedures of
nerve grafting surgery and its updated clinical outcomes.
The lecture will focus on
Laparoscopic surgery for urojogic diseases and ural nerve grafting
radical prostatectomy; and surgical techniques and updated clinic
outcomes at Kagawa University Hospital.
This lecture is part of the
Institute of Medicine's many medical series and with CME/CNE
accreditation. Admission to the lecture is free and is open to
members of the public. For further information, contact Sharimawati
