Metal Thieves Target Bridge
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - No piece of metal can be considered safe from the
prying eyes of thieves nowadays.
The "cannibalising" of any metal
piece lying around has irked some residents. Drain covers,
signboards, electrical cables and metal barriers on bridges have all
fallen victim to thieves who allegedly sold the metal to scrap
dealers.
Now some of the metal clips that
keep concrete drain covers in place on Junjungan Bridge have been
unscrewed and stolen. Some of the concrete drain covers are also
missing, presumably taken away or thrown into the river.
Residents said pedestrians using
the bridge now need to exercise care to avoid falling into the
drains that store water pipes on the bridge.
"The bridge was built at a cost of
more than $3 million for the benefit of the public. But some
irresponsible persons did not mind taking away metal parts of the
bridge for a small monetary reward.
"Earlier some of the metal barriers
on the bridge were taken away. Now the metal clips that keep the
concrete drain covers in place were also stolen. Next'ime, there may
be nothing left on the bridge except the section of road over the
river," they said. In view of the rampant theft, the residents
appealed to all scrap metal dealers to refrain from buying such
stolen items.
They also called for legislation
that will cancel the business licence of scrap metal dealers found
in possession of stolen government properties.-- Courtesy of Borneo
