Foreigner Held Over 'Illegitimate' Child

Bandar Seri Begawan - An Indonesian man who tried to register a child at the Department of Immigration and National Registration ended up in hot water yesterday.

The 37-year-old man was detained following his false claims that the child is his and a local woman whom he alleged is his wife. He claimed that they have three children, aged 16, 12 and six years old.

However, an officer at the Birth, Death and Adoption Registration Section doubted the Indonesian man's claims.

An investigation conducted by the Law Enforcement Section of the Department of Immigration and National Registration later discovered that the couple had never been married.

The Indonesian man finally admitted to have entered and stayed in the country illegally a few days ago using a 1999 passport. He temporarily resided in a neighbouring country and since his passport had expired, he entered the country without a passport by land.

Meanwhile, 11 people were apprehended last Wednesday night in the latest instalment of operations conducted by the Law Enforcement Section Department of Immigration and National Registration codenanied "Ops Berkas 118".

The operation led by the Assistant Director of Immigration and a Senior Chief Immigration Officer involved 23 personnel and took place from l0pm till tam. The targeted locations were rented rooms and rented houses of foreign workers in Kg Mulaut, Kg Bunot, Kg Lambak, Kg Madang and Kg Delima Dua.

During the operation, a total of eight special passes were issued. The 11 detained comprised Filipinos - three males and three females, Indonesians-two males and two females, and a Bangladeshi.

A 27-year old Filipino woman whose photocopied passport had a "dubious" immigration chop was caught during an inspection at a rented house in Kg Madang Berakas. She was taken to the BSB Police Station and initial investigation showed that the immigration chop in the passport was suspected to be forged. The case is still under investigation.

A 44-year-old Filipino woman who had no documents on her was caught during an inspection at a rented house in Kg Delima Satu Berakas. Initial investigation showed that her immigration pass had expired for 31 days.

Meanwhile a 40-year-old Indonesian man who had no documents on him was caught during an inspection at a rented house in Jln Hj Halus in Kg Bunot Perpindahan. It was found that his immigration pass had expired for 13 days. He was slapped with a compound fine of $100.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
