Fan Mishap Leaves Couple Shuddering
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - A couple in their 40s had the biggest shock of their lives yesterday when a wall-mounted fan dismantled itself and fell on their table, hitting the drinking glasses and splashing the contents on their clothes near the capital.

They looked bemused and frightened as they walked away from trouble while the restaurant owner apologised incessantly for the mishap. The couple as well as other patrons were lucky enough to escape the blade, which landed on their table.

Diners urged restaurant owners to check their electrical fittings regularly to ensure they were properly fixed. "Wears and tears could have loosened the screws that mounted the fan to the wall," the couple said, adding that "thankfully, no one got hurt during the freak accident".

However, another diner claimed it was the third time he had witnessed such mishap. "A few years ago, I saw a wall-mounted exhaust fan fly across a restaurant. Luckily, the person sitting behind the exhaust fan was in the toilet at the time. He would have been badly hurt," he said.

He also recalled the incident a few months back when the blades of a fan became loose. "If it's not for the cover, which was intact, the blades would have flown right off the fan and hit someone."

He urged restaurant owners to be diligent in checking electrical appliances at their eateries, as they could be sued if anyone got injured.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
