Foreigner Jailed For 'Saw Attack' And Overstaying

Bandar Seri Begawan - An Indian national was sentenced to nine months in jail and three strokes of the cane by the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to a 29-year-old-fellow countryman .and remaining in Brunei Darussalam unlawfully.

The court, heard that the defendant, Suppiah Veerappan, entered a grocery shop in the vicinity of Pantai Jerudong and approached the victim to ask for someone named "Susay". The victim ignored the defendant which angered him.

The defendant picked up a saw which was lying on the floor and poked thee complainant on the left side of his face. According to the Deputy Public Prosecutor Azrimah Rahman yesterday, the-victim suffered a small lacerated wound on the left side his face just behind the left eye.

Meanwhile, the defendant was found to have illegally remained in this country for three years and six months as he had failed to renew his visit pass which expired on December 13, 2003. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
