Working Towards A 'Producer Society'
By Za'imZaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - "In this era of globalisation, we must wise up and not be left behind. We want to be a society of entrepreneurs and not just a consumer society."

This was stated by Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Dr Awg Hj Ahmad, as guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the National Youth Entrepreneurial Placement Programme for Secondary Schools, yesterday. The event was held at the Entrepreneurial Development and National Standards and Accreditation Centre in Kg Sinaut. The minister urged the younger generation to work harder saying that the question right now was whether, youths are able to manage the challenges, problems and contradictions with wisdom.

"It all depends on ability, a proactive attitude, commitment and investment in all areas especially is Bruneians are to become a 'producer society'," the minister added.

"I believe Brunei cannot rest on its laurels and just be a consumer society forever, as civilizations are built on producing ideas and not on using ideas," Pehin Dato Seri Setia Dr Awg Hj Ahmad said adding that the privileges and comforts enjoyed today by youths were the results of proper planning by the country's leaders, especially His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The minister said the youth programme aimed to sow the seeds of entrepreneurship so that at least 25 per cent of participants would be `producers'.

After his speech, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources took a group photo with students participating in the programme and later toured an exhibition comprising of over 20 booths showcasing products by various entrepreneurs.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
