Tyre Store Turns Fiery Inferno

Bandar Seri Begawan – A tyre service centre cum store went up in a thick ball of smoke drawing hundreds of passersby to the scene yesterday around noon, in Gadong.

The sky-high thick black smoke engulfed the area creating a pandemonium and massive traffic blocks.

The tyre service centre at Simpang 15, in bustling Gadong road behind a popular coffee shop, was totally gutted by the fire resulting in injuring one man.

The brave and efficient firemen used water and foam to put-out the blaze and all cars were safely removed from the shop.

The smoke and fire had 12 fire engines from Beribi, Lambak, Temasek, Berakas and Central Fire Stations rushing to the scene, Berakas fire services personnel said yesterday, having received a distress call at 12.03 noon.

The roads were jam packed and piled with traffic trying to pass the area and those who were keen to observe the damage.

Motorists parked their vehicles along the side of the road driving slowly along Gadong

road as four boats from `Pelancaran', Rescue and Marine were also called to assist, the personnel added.

An employee of the tyre centre which stored thousands of tyres said the fire had started in the store.

It was learnt that the tyre repair and service centre which had been established for more than 20 years was undergoing renovation work to expand storage space. At the time of the incident, around 20 to 30 staff were working at the tyre centre.

The thick black smoke which engulfed the bustling area could be seen from a far distance. Police personnel were also cordoning-off the area from motorists.

Some 60-fire service personnel led by the operation officer, SSFS Hj Tamin managed to put-off the blaze in a record 27 minutes.

Also present at the scene were Acting Director of Fire Services, Acting Deputy and Acting Assistant Deputy of Fire Services Department.

The fire personnel also tried to prevent the blaze from spreading to surrounding areas and buildings. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
