By Izam S. Ya'akub

Bandar Seri Begawan – Dato Paduka Haji Sheikh Adrian bin Sheikh Mohamad recently attended the 26" Session of the Executive Council of the Islamic, Educational and Scientific Organisation (ISESCO) in Rabat, Morocco after attending the Second Meeting of the Secretaries General of the National Commissions for Education, Science and Culture, and the Officials in charge of the Competent Authorities in the Member States of ISESCO.

During the 26"' Executive Council Session, the Draft Three-Year Action Plan and Budget for the Years 20072009, the Draft Amendment to ISESCO's Charter, Rules of Procedure of the General Conference, Rules ofProcedure of the Executive Council, and the Observer Status Regulations were endorsed, with the reports from the assembly to be forwarded for adoption by the forthcoming session of General Conference of ISESCO in 2006.

The Draft Three-Year Action Plan and Budget for the Years 2007-2009 is aimed at achieving four strategies objectives, namely development of the educational system, promoting scientific research, activating cultural action in member states and contributing to bridging the digital divide between member states and developed countries.

Meanwhile, the Second Meeting of the Secretaries General of the National Commissions for Education, Science and Culture, and the officials in charge of the Competent Authorities in the Member States of ISESCO aims to strength partnership and cooperation relations between ISESCO National Commissions and competent authorities in the member states, and seek to develop the mechanisms of communication, coordination and consultation between the two parties.

Brunei Darussalam itself joined ISESCO on September 1,1985, and since then has sent officials from the Sultanate to participate in conferences, seminars and training programmes conducted by the organisation. This year, an official of the Permanent Secretary's Office of the Ministry of Education attended the Regional Training Session for Staff of National Commissions and Focal Points in English Speaking ISESCO Member States, held in Tehran, Iran and in September the Acting Director of Institut Teknologi Brunei represented Brunei Darussalam in the ISESCO regional Experts' Meeting on Technical and Vocational Education in Islamabad, Pakistan. Brunei Darussalam has also hosted several regional and national programmes of ISESCO, with Brunei previously hosting the Training Session for Arabic Language Trainers at Primary School Level, which was held from August 8 to 13 earlier this year. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
